Thank you for sharing! As I enter into motherhood with a tiny baby keeping me up all hours of the night, I plan to listen to audio books as I nurse her in an effort to maintain intellectual agility. We'll see how it goes!
I appreciate your remarks about good fiction here. Over the past year, I listened to Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time. I found his depiction of human nature in the characters captivating and engaging. Now I'm revisiting it a second time. Knowing how it goes, I've been able to focus more closely on the philosophy/anthropology under-girding the world he built, and have come away realizing the different degrees it converges and diverges with Christianity. Overall, it's given me an even deeper appreciation for the way God made the world and human nature. But even more than that, the series has re-awakened my imagination and ability to mentally visualize things. I haven't really experienced that since childhood, and it's been so fun to have that back.
Thank you again for your suggestions and insights! God bless!
Thanks so much for alerting me to the fiction of Robert Jordan, Mary Rita. I do not know his work and look forward to exploring further. Enjoy these precious days with the baby!
Thank you for your response! I’m actually still waiting for my baby to arrive... hopefully she’ll be here in around 3 weeks! And thank you for the reminder! My husband and I are looking forward to soaking in every moment with her!
You’re welcome! The Wheel of Time series is his most famous work, but it is very, very long. 14 books in all, and all of them are over 300 pages. It took me about a year to get through the entire series. But it is definitely worthwhile. Robert Jordan is a masterful storyteller and plot architect. And personally, I think he’s one of the best character writers I’ve ever encountered.
If you don’t want to commit to the entire series, the first book, The Eye of the World, can work as a stand alone novel in my opinion. I hope you enjoy it!
Excellent list, and I second your recommendation of Fr. Jacques Philippe. On the subject of Cal Newport and deep work: add A.G. Sertillanges' The Intellectual Life and Steven Pressfield's The War of Art. I've used both as morning meditation. (Yes, even Pressfield!)
O yes, Rhonda, Sertillanges most definitely needs to be on this list. I believe I've prayed with him as well. And I understand about bringing Pressfield into your meditation. Resistance is just another trick of the evil one.
