Beauty is a Love Story

Art is a summons into real presence and real communion

In this short clip from my talk, “Beauty 101,” I define the beautiful work of art as a love story.

For beauty is (according to the etymology of the ancient Greek term) a “call,” a “summons.”

A call to what?

To the real presence of the beloved.

Which is to say, the real presence of the good (and Good) that we are seeking. The real presence of some aspect of the human quest for genuine fulfillment.
